Premier League Top Goalscorer Odds

The Premier League is deemed to be the greatest league in the world and with that getting the Golden Boot in the Premier League is a big ask. Having the best goalscorer in the league is a massive help to getting Champions League football. However, it doesn't guarantee it, just look at Harry Kane and Tottenham Hotspur in the last 10 years.

Interestingly enough, in the 32 years of Premier League football, the top goalscorer has only come from the Premier League champions on 10 occasions. Before Erling Haaland won the top goalscorer award with Manchester City in 2022-23, you had to go back to 2012/13 for the last time somebody won the Premier League Golden Boot award and the Premier League title in the same season - that was Robin Van Persie with Manchester United.

How to pick a bet for Premier League Top Goalscorer

Let's be honest, at the start of the 2023/24 season, almost everybody expected Erling Haaland to win the Top Goalscorer award with ease but it didn't end up that way in the end. With just a few games remaining Haaland was tied with Cole Palmer of Chelsea. Haaland's goals per 90 minutes ratio dropped from 1.03 to 0.82 which is still exceptional but was still below Palmer and Newcastle United's Alexander Isak.

For future bets, it is worth noting a player that has an excellent goals per 90 and players for an attacking club. So for example, many would have fancied Ivan Toney if he wasn't banned, others would have potentially looked at Dominic Solanke but ultimately despite scoring a third of Bournemouth's goals, it won't be enough to win Solanke the award.

Newcastle United are a good team to follow as their games have been chaotic under Eddie Howe as they scored 68 goals last season and could potentially break the 80 goal mark this season. With Alexander Isak out for almost two months of Newcastle's season, he has an excellent chance of winning the award in future seasons.

Another element to look out for is consistency, Erling Haaland has struggled with consistency due to injury but is still a fantastic goalscorer but in the 2023/24 season, it was the consistency of Ollie Watkins that made him a top contender for the award, Watkins was also a top assister during the season.

| Year | Appearances | Goals | |:----:|:-----:|:------:|:-----:| | 2005/06 | 32 | 10 | | 2004-05 | 28 | 7 | | 2003–04 | 37 | 22 | | 2002–03 |35 | 17 | | 2001–02 |37 | 23 | | 2000–01 | 19 | 5 | | 1999–2000 | 37 | 23 | | 1998–99 | 30 | 14 | | 1997–98 | 17 | 2 | | 1996–97 | 31 | 25 | | 1995–96 | 35 | 31 | | 1994–95 | 42 | 34 | | 1993–94 | 40 | 31 | | 1992–93 | 21 | 16 |

Alan Shearer spent the first five years of his career in the first division rather than the Premier League, so his 260 goals come just from Blackburn Rovers and Newcastle United, so Shearer should have 23 more goals to his name from Southampton and after just 36 games and 7 goals from 1997-98 and 2000-01, Alan Shearer's record is attainable but as it stands - nobody in the Premier League is close to Shearer's goal tally.
