Tony Ferguson has been lined up for UFC 249 for months now, originally billed to fight Khabib Nurmagomedov. With Khabib locked down in Russia, Ferguson will instead be fighting Justin Gaethje for the UFC Lightweight Championship. Although the title is for the ‘interim’ belt, for Ferguson, this is the fight to decide the outright best Lightweight fighter in the world. On a media call on Tuesday, Ferguson told reporters he was ‘defending his belt for the third time’, regardless of Khabib’s claim to the title. Gaethje on the other hand was more accepting of the interim title, claiming Saturday’s fight will determine ‘the number 2 man in the world’.
In the octagon, both fighters have a wrestling background, but also have a record for knockouts. Ferguson has a 42% knockout rate, whilst Gaethje boasts a 78% rate. So whether this fight is played out standing up or on the ground, we can look forward to quality fighting either way. Ferguson is on a 12 win fighting streak so is the obvious 1/2 favourite. If you fancy Ferguson to add to his 12 career knockouts on his road to victory, then Bet UK have boosted Ferguson to win by KO/TKO/DQ to a huge 11/4.
Cejudo v Cruz Betting Tips
The second title fight of the night is for the UFC Bantamweight Championship, between defending champion Henry Cejudo and challenger Dominick Cruz. Cejudo might hold the title coming into the fight, but Cruz is confident of taking the title on Saturday night. He was quoted as saying he was the ‘Michael Jordan of the 135-pound division’, essentially staking his claim as the greatest bantamweight fighter of all time.
However, with no fight in over 3 years, Cejudo has to be considered favourite here. We are backing the champion to successfully defend his title by decision on Saturday night, at odds of 7/5.
Ngannou v Rozenstruik Betting Tips
The headline heavyweight fight of the night pits Francis Ngannou against the unbeaten Jairzinho Rozenstruik. There’s no title on the line in this one, but it should still be a fight to remember. Both fighters are knockout artists, with a combined 19 knockouts in 27 fights for the pair. Ngannou has the height, weight and reach advantage in this one. In particular, the extra 5 inch reach could prove the difference in a fight that will be fought standing.
With all that being said, we are backing Ngannou to end Rozenstruik’s unbeaten record with a TKO/KO at odds of 5/6.
Stephens v Kattar Betting Tips
The next fight in the main card sees Jeremy Stephens taking on Calvin Kattar in a Featherweight clash. Both fighters rank in the top 10 featherweights in the world, and although Stephens is the higher ranked, Kattar is a 20/57 favourite. Signs point to this fight lasting the distance, with 50% of the pairs combined fights being decided by decision.
In particular, 8 of Kattar’s wins have come by decision. Bet UK are offering odds of 5/4 for Kattar to win on points again this weekend, which looks like good value going off past reputation.
Ceronne v Pettis Betting Tips
The final fight of the preliminary card is perhaps one that should have made the main card. Donald ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone takes on Anthony Pettis in a bout that includes two of the UFC’s most experienced welterweights. Cowboy comes into the fight fresh off his loss to Conor McGregor back in January, and has the chance for revenge against Pettis, who knocked him out in 2013. Since that fight, Pettis has actually lost more than he has won, perhaps a sign that he is past his best.
Regardless, the experience of both fighter should prove to make this fight a memorable one. We are backing Pettis to repeat his feat of the original fight and once again win by TKO/KO or DQ at odds of 2/1.
