Newcastle New Years Racing Tips

There is £285,000 up for grabs on the BetUK-sponsored card on Newcastle's Tapeta on New Year's Day. Many big names from the Flat will line up to take their chances across a classy seven-race card.

Here are tips for all seven Newcastle races, including six Class 2 events.

2.00pm – BetUK. Home Of The Acca-Fenwa Handicap (2m½f)

On his 11th birthday, RAINBOW DREAMER can be forgiven for not being at the height of his powers. But he does not have to be to win this from a mark of 93. He twice ran the sort of race over this course and distance that would win this or at least go extremely close. A couple of runs at Kempton in the autumn ought to have put him spot-on for this valuable prize.

Selection: Rainbow Dreamer

2.35pm – BetUK. It's Where The UK Bets Apprentice Handicap (1m2f)

On his last run over this course and distance, BROCTUNE RED finished third under today's rider Aiden Brookes. He can be forgiven for not getting home over 1m4f last time, and Brookes resumes the partnership now. Trainer Gillian Boanas has had seven runners since December 16. The only two that have gone off shorter than 66-1 have finished second and first. That is a sign of a yard in good heart.

Selection: Broctune Red

3.10pm – Boost Your Acca-Fenwa With BetUK Handicap (1m2f)

Since joining Mick Appleby and The Horse Watchers, PENZANCE has been hugely progressive. He has won at Chelmsford by big margins the last twice, recording significant career bests on each occasion. A further rise in the weights should not be able to stop him, according to Racing Post Ratings, even against a field of well-known rivals.

Selection: Penzance

3.45pm – BetMGM: It's Showtime Handicap (1m)

As close to a course expert as you are likely to get without having actually won here, ALREHB has been placed on all four runs at Newcastle. More than that, the best run of his life came over this very course and distance in the summer. He returns here on a slightly lower mark, and it would be no surprise if this valuable event had not been planned for a while.

Selection: Alrehb

4.15pm – Boost Your Acca At BetMGM Fillies' Handicap (7f)

It has not taken Jane Chapple-Hyam long to improve SHADES OF SUMMER. Mostly, that has come over a stiff 6f or 7f, but she was able to take another step in spite of a drop to Wolverhampton's sharp 6f last time. There remains more improvement in her.

Selection: Shades Of Summer

4.45pm – Best Racing Odds Guaranteed At BetMGM Handicap (6f)

Another who has improved of late for the switch to a smaller yard, BLUE PRINCE, posted a career-best when winning over this distance at Southwell 11 days ago. He did that in the style of a horse who will suit Newcastle's straight course even better, with a come-from-behind style that often plays well here. He has not finished improving yet.

Selection: Blue Prince

5.15pm – Always Gamble Responsibly With BetUK Handicap (6f)

Today is the day that Harry Charlton takes sole charge of the licence he held with his father, Roger. He sends out his first runner under perfect conditions to make a winning start in his own right. BATAL DUBAI won a good handicap here at the Northumberland Plate meeting under a confident ride by Oisin Murphy. Charlton has had leading course rider Clifford Lee booked nice and early for the ride, so he seems to be leaving little to chance.

Selection: Batal Dubai
