Welsh Grand National Tips
The main event of Welsh racing is the Welsh Grand National which takes place on the 27th of December 2023 at 14:50. The race is one of the most challenging steeplechase events in the United Kingdom and is held at Chepstow Racecourse, located on the outskirts of Chepstow in Monmouthshire, Wales.
Bet on the Welsh Grand National
As a handicap event, horses can carry different weights based on their previous performances, so if a highly-rated horse has underperformed in recent races, it might be one to look out for. The race is ran over approximately 3 miles and 5 furlongs, with dozens of challenging obstacles. With a long history behind the event, this is one of the top events in the world, attracting the very best horses, jockeys and trainers to Wales.
Welsh Grand National 2024 Tips
12.00pm – Play Coral Racing-Super-Series For Free Maiden Hurdle (2m31/2f)
This opening maiden contest could go to MINELLA BLUEWAY. Evan Williams often lines one up for this meeting and won this race five years ago with Present Value, so there is every chance that Minella Blueway has been trained for this contest. He was second at Ffos Las on his last hurdles start, when he improved on his debut third at this course, and any further progress should give him a sound chance.
Selection: Minella Blueway
12.30pm – Coral Get Closer To The Action Novices' Hurdle (2m)
It’s difficult to get away from JACKPOT D’ATHOU, who was impressive when winning over course and distance last month and represents the powerful Paul Nicholls and Harry Cobden combination. There should be improvement to come on his second start following wind surgery and a 7lb penalty might not stop the follow up.
Selection: Jackpot D’Athou
1.05pm – Coral Best Odds Guaranteed Handicap Chase (2m31/2f)
There is plenty of rain forecast at Chepstow overnight and that might suit FIRST FLOW. The Kim Bailey-trained runner was no match for Boothill at Ascot last time, but that rival has gone on to score again since and First Flow has escaped a rise in the weights. Provided the rain comes in the amount forecast, he might prove too well handicapped for these rivals.
Selection: First Flow
1.40pm – Coral Racing Club Join For Free Handicap Hurdle (2m71/2f)
A cracking staying handicap that can go to TANGANYIKA. Trainer Venetia Williams can do little wrong and the selection is only 4lb higher than when winning on testing ground at Bangor this month. He turns out quickly just 12 days later and is capable of following up.
Selection: Tanganyika
2.10pm – Coral Finale Juvenile Hurdle (2m)
Harsh has a lot of potential but it’s hard to oppose BURDETT ROAD, who was so impressive when coming from last-to-first to win at Cheltenham last month and looks every inch a top-class hurdler in the making. He jumps and travels well, and brings a high-class level of ability from that Flat, so it will take something special to beat him.
Selection: Burdett Road
2.50pm – Coral Welsh Grand National Handicap Chase (3m61/2f)
Stamina tests don’t come much more gruelling than this one and that should suit the improving SUPER SURVIVOR, who warmed up for the test with an excellent second behind stablemate Git Maker at Lingfield last month. That should have put Super Survivor spot on and he won the novice handicap chase on this card last year, so evidently likes the track.
Selection: Super Survivor
3.25pm – New Bet-In-Race With Coral Handicap Chase (2m)
This is a competitive race but it can go to WALKINTHEWOODS. The six-year-old was a disappointing favourite when well held at Taunton last time, but he didn’t stay the 2m7f trip and that wasn’t lost on trainer Evan Williams, who drops his runner back to 2m this time. The sharper test looks certain to suit Walkinthewoods and there is more to come.
Selection: Walkinthewoods
3.55pm – Coral Committed To Safer Gambling Open National Hunt Flat Race (2m)
The bumper can go to ROCKING MAN. He was impressive over course and distance on his debut and ran away from a good field in a decent time. There should be more improvement in the locker with that first outing under his belt and trainer Sam Thomas has had a superb winter.
Selection: Rocking Man
