Euro 2024: Daily Tips - July 2nd
The round of 16 stage of the European Championship comes to an end with two blockbuster clashes on Tuesday involving some of the surprise packages of this year’s tournament.
Romania topped their group ahead of Belgium, Ukraine and Slovakia after all four teams finished on four points, with the Tricolorii topping the section on goal difference.
Their reward is a round of 16 game against the Netherlands, who disappointed somewhat in the group stages.
Austria finished ahead of the Dutch and France to surprise many by winning Group D, they now face Turkey, who were among the top-scoring teams in the group stages as they finished runners-up to Portugal.
We have picked out the best bets for the two games, in a double that pays at 15/2.
Tip 1 - Draw in Romania v Netherlands @ 7/2
Romania have only gone beyond the group stage of a European Championship once in their history, in 2000, and they will be looking to progress to the quarter-finals as they did 24 years ago when they face the Netherlands in the round of 16.
Edward Iordanescu’s men were impressive in their opening 3-0 win over Ukraine before falling short against Belgium and then playing out a stalemate with Slovakia that ensured both of them progressed.
The Tricolorii are built on solid foundations and have transformed themselves into a football team who are hard to beat.
They have only lost two of their last 18 matches, against Belgium and Colombia, arguably the most in-form team in the world at the moment.
There is no shame in those results and Romania are fancied to get a draw against the Oranje here.
They have drawn four of their last seven outings and the Dutch are yet to convince at this tournament.
They were disappointing in a 3-2 loss over Austria and needed to come from behind to get the better of a Poland team who were without Robert Lewandowski.
They did hold France to a 0-0 draw, but they are hard to trust at such a short price and the draw at full-time is the selection.
Tip 2 - Austria to beat Turkey @ 23/25
Austria have impressed so far at the Euros, topping their section ahead of France and the Netherlands.
The squad seem particularly suited to Ralf Rangnick’s desired style of play and have been impressive in their work both on and off the ball.
They were unfortunate to lose 1-0 to France but bounced back with successes against Poland and the Dutch, scoring six goals in the process.
Das Team have now won seven of their last 10 matches, including a 6-1 success over their opponents here back in in March.
Turkey will be without their key midfielder Hakan Calhanoglu due to suspension as well and have lost four of their last seven games in total.
That lack of success looks set to continue with Austria fancied to win this.
