Euro 2024 Daily Accumulator: 30/06/2024
The group stage of Euro 2024 is almost a distant memory and four more teams will be looking to book their places in the quarter-finals on Sunday.
Although it was mission accomplished in terms of finishing at the top of Group C for England, there has been little enthusiasm about the football Gareth Southgate’s team has produced in three uninspiring games.
After draws against Denmark and Slovenia, they will be looking for a lot better when they take on Slovakia, who finished third in Group E behind Romania and Belgium.
Spain, meanwhile, could hardly have been more impressive in being the only country to win all three of their group matches, their title credentials have been there for all to see.
However, their last-16 clash against surprise package Georgia looks intriguing, particularly as Willy Sagnol’s side were superb in Wednesday’s 2-0 victory over Group F winners Portugal.
We have a bet in each game that you can pair into a double that pays 3/1.
Tip 1 - Under 2.5 goals in England vs Slovakia @ 8/11
England did little to delight their followers in their group matches despite the fact they came out on top of their section, and it is difficult to imagine anything but a scrap for them against Slovakia in Gelsenkirchen on Sunday.
The Three Lions have ensured difficulties getting their top players to have much influence and, while Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane have both been on the scoresheet, their contributions have generally been disappointing.
The introduction of Manchester United teenager Kobbie Mainoo may provide more structure in midfield, but it is difficult to see Gareth Southgate’s side creating a host of chances against opponents who could be tempted to sit back and hope they can hit England on the break.
Slovakia have already stung one of the continent’s leading lights, beating Belgium 1-0 in Frankfurt in their Group E opener, even though their opponents did have two goals chalked off by VAR.
They may not show too much attacking intent and it would not be a surprise if a scrappy game ensues, so under 2.5 goals in the third clash of the last-16 looks a sensible play.
Tip 2 - Both teams to score in Spain vs Georgia @ 7/5
Spain eased their way through Group B without conceding a goal, but they may find Georgia have something to test their solid defence when they meet in the day’s second game in Cologne.
La Roja were the only team to take maximum points, but this could be a great clash of styles between the Spaniards’ slick approach play and the Georgians' more direct forward runs.
Georgia took just two minutes to stun Portugal on Wednesday and it is difficult to see anything other than a positive approach from Sagnol’s team in this one.
The rank outsiders have nothing to lose and it is worth taking a chance that both teams can find the net, as the underdogs will simply refuse to lie down.
