Champions League Matchday Eight Tips
The final round of the inaugural league format takes place on Wednesday, as several teams remain unclear of their Champions League fate.
Only Liverpool and Barcelona have secured their place in the top eight, which means automatic qualification to the last 16.
Arsenal look pretty sure of joining the top two, but Manchester City, Aston Villa and Celtic all have something to play for on Wednesday evening.
Tip 1 – Aston Villa vs Celtic – Under 2.5 Goals @ 11/8
Aston Villa are guaranteed a place in the play-offs, but they would love to automatically progress without the need for an extra two matches.
A win at home to Celtic will give them a good chance of finishing in the top eight, which looked nailed on when they won their first three matches.
Celtic head to Villa Park just one point behind their opponents, after a run of five European matches without defeat, meaning the Scottish champions are now 18th.
A 7-1 defeat at Borussia Dortmund on Matchday Two will have caused major concern for Brendan Rodgers, but his team has responded in fine fashion.
A trip to Villa Park is another stern test, especially with Kyogo Furuhashi having departed Celtic Park to move to France.
Unai Emery’s tactical nous has seen him collect three Europa League titles with Sevilla, and Villa should just get over the line in a tight battle.
Tip 2 – Man City vs Club Brugge – First Goalscorer - Erling Haaland @ 19/10
Nobody would have expected Man City to be outside the top 24 teams going into the final round of matches.
Pep Guardiola’s men have lost three and drawn one of their last four Champions League ties to leave them needing a win over Club Brugge to qualify for the play-offs.
The Belgians are five places and three points ahead of the Premier League champions and have already beaten the likes of Aston Villa and Sporting Lisbon during the League stage. City will be buoyed by back-to-back home league wins, and the time has arrived for Erling Haaland to step up again.
The Norwegian has scored four goals in City’s last two European home games and was also on the scoresheet in Saturday’s 3-1 win over Chelsea.
Tip 3 – Girona vs Arsenal – BTTS – No @ 21/20
It would need a massive turn of events for Arsenal not to finish in the top eight, as they currently sit three points clear of the play-offs with a +12 goal difference.
They travel to face a Girona team who are already out of the competition, having collected just three points from seven games.
The Spanish outfit have failed to score in any of their last four Champions League matches and although Arsenal could make some changes, the hosts are likely to struggle in front of goal again.
Tip 4 – PSV Eindhoven vs Liverpool – PSV Double Chance @ 8/13
Liverpool have already qualified for the last-16 with a 100% record to date and they head to the Netherlands to face a PSV team who have lost just two of their seven matches. The Reds are likely to make a number of changes, with a crucial league game at Bournemouth on Saturday, which will give the hosts a chance to seal their place in the middle action of the table.
Peter Bosz’s squad are unbeaten this season at the Philips Stadion and have scored seven goals in their last two European home fixtures.
