Knockout Tips

The world’s top three ranked players Luke Humphries, Michael Smith and Michael van Gerwen all exited the Grand Slam of Darts at the group stage of the event and those were the only previous winners of the competition.

It’s guaranteed that there will be a new champion crowned in Wolverhampton on Sunday and there is a cracking knockout stage to look forward to on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Tip 1: [James Wade to beat Cameron Menzies @ 10/13 https://www.betuk.com/betting/darts/grand-slam-of-darts#event/1022085570)

James Wade, for a long time regarded as darts’ premier double hitter, has been reinvented as a power scorer.

The Machine rattled in 21 scores of 100 or better while averaging 103.12 when losing 5-3 to Mickey Mansell in his opening group-stage contest and those numbers came from a checkout success of only 23 per cent.

It was the heavy hitting of the Aldershot arrowsmith that stood out in that contest and that has been the case for a fair while.

The Machine defeated Luke Humphries and Rowby John Rodriguez to top Group A and book his spot in the last 16 of the Grand Slam and the 41-year-old looks a bet to beat Cameron Menzies.

Cammy is enjoying the best form of his PDC career and the Scot won his maiden Players Championship title a couple of weeks ago. However, the 35-year-old fell apart on the big stage when averaging just 81.06 in defeat to Dave Chisnall in the opening round of the World Grand Prix last month.

The Glasgow arrowsmith signed off from the group stage by averaging only 89.80 in a 5-1 loss to Beau Greaves and the erratic Scot can be opposed against Wade.

Tip 2: Jermaine Wattimena to beat Dimitri van den Bergh @ 10/13

Jermaine Wattimena was a perfect three wins from three games in a stacked group containing Mike de Decker, Michael Smith and Mensur Sulovic and the Machine Gun looks ready to fire when he takes on Dimiti van den Bergh.

Wattimena averaged 104.32, 97.50 and 95.95 in his three pool matches and the recent European Championship finalist has developed into a serious threat in major events.

The Dutchman is inside the world’s top 16 in terms of Pro Tour averages this season, and while Van den Bergh is a dangerous big-stage opponent, the Belgian isn’t getting anywhere near Wattimena’s numbers this season.

The Dreammaker saved his best for his final group-stage contest against Keane Barry, but performances against Luke Littler and Lourence Ilagan were way off the level that will be required to down the Machine Gun.

Tip 3: Gary Anderson to beat Stephen Bunting @ 11/20

Gary Anderson is in scintillating form and the Flying Scotsman can steam past last-16 opponent Stephen Bunting.

The Musselburgh arrowsmith averaged 113.20, 105.19 and 95.75 in his three Grand Slam group-stage games, the Scot has recorded staggering numbers of 100.29 across 76 Pro Tour games this term and the two-time PDC world champion is an incredible performer.

Bunting played well to get through a high-class section containing Wessel Nijman, Gian van Veen and Josh Rock, but a best-of-19 leg last-16 tie against the best performer in darts looks an altogether more difficult task.

Our Group Stage Tips

The unique group-stage extravaganza of the Grand Slam of Darts gets underway on Saturday and there are no shortage of title contenders.

Luke Humphries, Luke Littler, Michael van Gerwen and Gary Anderson head the outright betting, but we take a look at the group stage of the competition and the battle to qualify for the knockout rounds in Wolverhampton.

Tip 1: Jermaine Wattimena to win Group E @ 4/1

Michael Smith is the red-hot 6/5 favourite to top Group E at the Grand Slam of Darts, but Bully Boy looks vulnerable with recent Grand Prix winner Mike De Decker, in-form Jermaine Wattimena and Mensur Suljovic in opposition.

De Decker’s chance is clear for all to see and Smith would be a big runner on his best form, but there may not be as much between those two arrowsmiths and Wattimena as the prices suggest.

The Dutchman reached the final of the European Championship last month and, while that was an unexpected effort according to the outright odds, it certainly wasn’t when you consider the Machine Gun’s floor form.

The Den Helder arrowsmith is inside the top-16 in terms of Pro Tour averages this season and Wattimena has made four European Tour quarter-finals this season.

There hasn’t been too many deep runs in recent Players Championship events, but the Machine Gun has lost with averages of 94.51, 86.42, 101.62, 104.76, 98.23, 101.57 and 103.14 in the last seven PC tournaments and, with a little more good fortune he may well have picked up a title this term.

Offers of 4/1 about a confident and in-form Wattimena look too good to ignore.

Tip 2: Ryan Joyce to win Group G - 11/2

Noa-Lynn van Leuven is unlikely to do much damage in Group G, which leaves a three-way shootout between Michael van Gerwen, Gary Anderson and Ryan Joyce and there is no way Joyce should be an 11/2 chance.

Of course, being drawn in a section containing MVG and the Flying Scotsman is not ideal, but Relentless has shown he can compete with the elite this term.

The Newcastle arrowsmith enjoyed a fantastic run to the semi-finals of the Grand Prix last month and the 39-year-old got the better of top-level performers Josh Rock, Nathan Aspinall and Rob Cross during his journey to the last four of that Leicester events.

Joyce have moved up to number 35 on the PDC rankings this season and, while that’s a way off the elite of the sport, Relentless skips many events held in Europe and the Newcastle man is a better performer than he rating suggests.

The group-stage games at the Grand Slam are played over a short best-of-nine-leg format, which narrows the gap between the fancied runners and outsiders and there is enough in the price to back Joyce to eclipse Van Gerwen and Anderson and top Group G.

Grand Slam of Darts FAQs

Who has won the most Grand Slam of Darts tournaments?

Phil Taylor has won more Grand Slam of Darts events than anyone in history winning six of the first eight tournaments. It looked like Michael Van Gerwen would overtake him after winning three in a row between 2015 and 2017 but MvG will be massively disappointed with his performances on this stage in recent years.

What is the format of the Grand Slam of Darts?

Firstly players must qualify for the event by winning one of the Players Championships or one of the events on the European Tour. 32 players qualify for the event and are split into four pots of eight to make eight groups. The top two in each group and go into a knockout stage where the final two will be announced.
