England Vs Australia ODI Betting Tips
After a T20 series which ended 1-1 after the decider was rained off in Manchester, England take on Australia in a five-game ODI series which begins at Trent Bridge on Thursday.
Harry Brook will captain the hosts with Jos Buttler out injured while interim coach Marcus Trescothick is in charge as Brendon McCullum does not take over the white-ball team until January.
Here we pick out the best bets for the five-game series, which comes to a close in Durham on Sunday, September 29.
Tip 1 – Travis Head to be top series Australia run scorer @ 5/2
Australia are a short price to win this five-game ODI series after the pair shared the spoils in the recent T20 clashes.
A large reason for that price is the strength of the visitors’ batting lineup, which contains Steve Smith, Glenn Maxwell, Marnus Labuschagne, Mitch Marsh and Travis Head.
That is enough to put fear into any bowling attack but it could be the latter who is the star of the show.
Head has been one of the most in-form batters in world cricket in recent times and carried that form over into the two T20s earlier this month.
The 30-year-old made knocks of 31 and 59 in that clash and has, in total, made six half-centuries in his last 10 innings.
Head hit 30 from one Sam Curran over in the first T20 and while he is unlikely to adopt such an aggressive approach in this 50-over series, he is clearly in great nick and looks a worthy favourite to be Australia’s top run scorer.
Tip 2 – Ben Duckett to be top series England run scorer @ 3/1
Ben Duckett has impressed since being named as England’s opener in November 2022.
He is averaging 44.1 with a strike rate of 89 in red-ball matches and he is now set to be given the chance to replicate that in the 50-over version of the game.
The left-hander is known for his aggressive approach to scoring and in one-day cricket he averages 38.5 with a strike rate of 100 from 82 games.
Duckett is likely to play most, if not all, of the five games and looks a decent bet to fit into his new role with ease.
Tip 3 – Adil Rashid top series England wicket-taker @ 5/2
Adil Rashid looks set to relish the late-summer pitches and English conditions in this series and has a solid chance of being England’s top wicket-taker.
Jofra Archer’s workload will be managed and many of the other pace options are likely to be chopped and changed too as the home team look for their best combination.
However, England’s options for spin are more sparse. Rashid is the standout spinner in this format and his dependability and quality means he is likely to play the majority of the games and can star against the Aussies.
England Vs Australia - T20 Tips
The dust has settled on the nation's Test series triumph over Sri Lanka and England now turn their attention back to white-ball cricket with Australia arriving for a string of T20 and ODI matches at the end of the summer.
First up is a three-match T20 series with England and Australia set to do battle in Southampton, Cardiff and Manchester in the shortest format.
Brendon McCullum does not yet take the reins for England's white-ball team with Marcus Trescothick instead tasked with coaching the team against their arch rivals.
Tip 1 - Australia to win series 2-1 @ 7/5
The first match of this T20 series between England and Australia will take place at the Rose Bowl in Southampton and that is not good news for the hosts.
England have lost three of their last four T20 internationals at the venue and they could find themselves on the back foot early in this series.
Not since their semi-final exit at this year's T20 World Cup in June have England played in the T20 format, whereas the Aussies have just warmed up with a 3-0 series win over Scotland.
The tourists look the more prepared, especially as England have had to ring the changes with their squad and will be without talismanic captain Jos Buttler for the T20 series at the very least.
Buttler has so often dug England out of holes in this format and his absence is a massive blow, so Australia are worth backing to come out on top in this series at the very least, with a 2-1 scoreline the most tempting.
Tip 2 - Sam Curran top England series run scorer @ 5/1
Buttler's absence shakes up the top England series run scorer market, which is further impacted by the fact opener Phil Salt will be deputy captain.
Whether or not Salt takes the gloves remains to be seen but the prospect of captaining, opening and being wicketkeeper could be a bit daunting.
Even if Salt only has two of those responsibilities, his batting could take a knock and punters should look further down the betting for this particular market.
Few players shone with the bat at the T20 World Cup and punters might instead want to look at domestic form.
One player who has had a decent summer is Sam Curran, who was named player of the series in The Hundred for champions Oval Invincibles this year.
Curran struck 201 runs in just six innings for his franchise team and there is a good chance he will translate that form to T20 internationals.
Tip 3 - Travis Head top Australia series run scorer @ 2/1
Picking the top series run scorer for Australia is a little easier with Travis Head the obvious choice at 2/1.
Head was impressive in the recent T20 series with Scotland, opening that series with a knock of 80 off just 25 balls.
In his last 10 T20 internationals, Head has averaged 38 with a strike-rate of 172 and he is in excellent form in this format for Australia.
The opener will get to attack England's bowlers from the very start and is an established component of this Australia batting lineup, so back him at 2/1 to top score in the series for the visitors.
