Saul Alvarez Vs Jermell Charlo
Saul Alvarez put his four super middleweight world titles on the line in the early hours of Sunday morning as he takes on Jermell Charlo at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
Charlo is the undisputed light middleweight champion and an elite fighter, but the 154lbs king is stepping up two weight divisions to challenge Alvarez at 168lbs and that could have a huge bearing on the outcome of the fight.
Canelo is no stranger to moving up division himself – the Mexican was beaten when taking on Dmitrii Bivol at light heavyweight last year. However, Alvarez has since got back on the winning trail with victories over John Ryder and Gennadiy Golovkin, and the 33-year-old remains a potent super middleweight threat.
Tip 1 - Saul Alvarez to win by stoppage @ 27/10
Alvarez has needed the decision of the judges to win his last two fights against Ryder and Golovkin but things may be more clear-cut against Charlo.
Golovkin is a former elite fighter who has never been stopped while the Kazakh's only two defeats were both inflicted by Canelo.
Ryder, meanwhile, is a world-level performer and a genuine and durable super-middleweight. Canelo was taken the distance by the Brit but Charlo may offer less resistance.
There is no doubt that the American is a superb fighter and Iron Man is a well-drilled technician under his respected trainer, Derrick James. However, the undisputed light middleweight champ takes a huge step up to 168lbs and that could prove decisive.
Alvarez is physically big and powerful enough to have operated at light heavyweight in the past, and although the speed and skill of Charlo can cause the Mexican problems, the raw power of Canelo can see the man from Guadalajara win by stoppage.
Tip 2 - Under 10.5 rounds at 41/20
The speed, skill and movement of Caleb Plant and Billy Joe Saunders have caused Canelo problems recently, and it was also the case in patches when the Mexican took on Amir Khan in 2016.
However, the 33-year-old eventually stopped all of those opponents and that came despite fairly limited ambition from Plant and Saunders.
Charlo is an undisputed champion and with that comes aggression, confidence and fighting spirit. The American may choose to meet fire with fire in Las Vegas, but if Iron Man does decide to gamble against the power of Canelo then there could be an early ending at the T-Mobile Arena.
Backing under 10.5 rounds looks like the play in what should be another fantastic big-fight night in Nevada.
