Josh Taylor Vs Jack Catterall Fight Tips

Two years on from their first fight, the highly-anticipated rematch between Josh Taylor and Jack Catterall is set to take place in Leeds on Saturday night.

Taylor was awarded a split-decision victory when the pair faced off in Glasgow in 2022 and the ill-feeling between the pair has continued to bubble following that closely-fought contest.

Catterall is the narrow 4/5 favourite this time around, with Taylor a 26/25 chance and the draw a 15/1 shot.

Josh Taylor v Jack Catterall Predictions

Tip 1 Josh Taylor to beat Jack Catterall @ 26/25

Taylor defended his undisputed super-lightweight crown against Catterall in 2022 after the Scottish fighter was awarded a controversial split-decision victory in that Glasgow contest.

Many believed that Catterall had done enough to take the titles away from the Tartan Tornado, but the Scot was handed the verdict and walked away with his four belts.

Either way, it was certainly one of the poorest performances of Taylor’s career and a mile away from the level that the East Lothian fighter had shown in victories over Jose Carlos Ramirez and Regis Prograis.

Taylor has fought just once since that controversial victory and the 33-year-old was comprehensively outpointed in that contest by Teofimo Lopez.

That defeat has raised questions about Taylor’s ability to continue to operate at world level, but Lopez is potentially an elite-level fighter and Catterall hasn’t exactly starred since his loss to the Tartan Tornado.

El Gato has beaten Darragh Foley and Jorge Linares following the loss to Taylor, but those are two exposed and limited opponents and they were hardly dazzling successes for the Chorley man.

Of course, Catterall went very close to beating the Scot in 2022, but that is the standout performance on the 30-year-old’s card and it would have been nice to have seen a bit more in El Gato’s last couple of fights.

It’s also worth considering that Catterall had a 7/1 chance to win the first fight with Taylor, and the Lancashire fighter is now the 4/5 favourite. Clearly, El Gato has to be considerably shorter this time around, but it’s hard to see the 30-year-old as the one to beat when you consider what Taylor has achieved in his career.

This should be a cracking contest and, at 26/25, the Tartan Tornado looks the value bet.

Tip 2 Josh Taylor to win by decision @ 11/5

There is sure to be plenty of aggression in the Leeds grudge match, but that may not lead to a stoppage. Taylor was on the canvas in the first contest with Catterall, but the Chorley man has just 13 knockout victories from 29 career bouts.

Taylor’s record is 13 stoppages from 20 fights, and while the Scot does carry power to hurt opponents, Catterall is a defensive-minded and awkward fighter who is unlikely to stand and trade with the Scot.

Take the Tartan Tornado for a repeat decision victory.

What has happened since Taylor Vs Catterall I

The defeat to Josh Taylor led to Jack Catterall taking a step back for a small period but in 2023 Catterall picked up wins against Darragh Foley and Jorge Linares as he picked up the WBA Inter-Continental Light-Welterweight title. Meanwhile, Josh Taylor would suffer defeat in his next fight losing the WBO and 'The Ring' Light-Welterweight titles to Teofimo Lopez.

The Tartan Tornado - Taylor will go into this bout knowing that he has a point to prove, although his only victory by KO since 2018 came against the Thai fighter Apinan Kongsong in 2020. Catterall also only has one victory by KO during this period. This means that whoever wins the fight on Saturday 25th May will be won by the better boxer.
