About The Ascot Gold Cup
One of the most prestigious horse races for stayers, the Gold Cup is held on the third day of Royal Ascot. Open to horses aged four years and over, this Group one race is contested over a distance of two miles and three furlongs, which means stamina is key for a strong performance.
First established in 1807, the race was originally open to horses who were three-years-old, and the inaugural winner was Master Jackey. However, this has since changed to four-years-old as the race has become a staple of the long distances stayers triple crown alongside the Goodwood Cup and Doncaster Cup, both of which are run later in the season.
The most successful horse to land multiple victories in the Ascot Gold Cup is Yeats, who landed four victories in this race before going on to win the Goodwood Cup in two of those seasons. Within this race history, he became the first horse to win this race on three successive occasions as a seven-year-old and his success is yet to be beaten. However, there is one horse in recent seasons to win this race three times, and that is Stradivarius.
When it comes to trainers who have managed to land wins in the Gold Cup, the name which stands out from the crowds is Aidan O’Brien. With eight wins to his name since 2006, he’s the most successful trainer with horses such as Kyprios, Order of St George and Leading Light.
