History of horse racing in Dubai

Although many famous horses who have been bred in the UK and Ireland can trace their routes back to the Arabian horses who are famed for being thoroughbreds, racing in Dubai didn't actually begin until the early 1980s.

The first meeting was located at a dusty camel track and played host to three races, a sprint, a mile contest and a mile and a half contest. However, it wasn't until 1992 that, Nad Al Sheba racecourse officially opened and allowed many of the top jockeys to travel to the UAE to play their trade.

In 1996 the first Dubai World Cup was held at the same racecourse. However, this event moved to Meydan and introduced the now iconic Meydan Grandstand to the racing world. Although the location of the race has changed, the calibre of the 10-furlong race has not, and all eyes will be on Dubai on Dubai World Cup Night.

About the Dubai World Cup

Held annually on the final weekend of March, The Dubai World Cup carries the largest prize money on offer in thoroughbred racing at a huge $12 million. Classed as the world's richest horse race, there have been many competitors from the US, UAE, Japan, and Great Britain taking to the track on race day. Partnered with the Dubai World Cup Carnival, which is also run at the Meydan racecourse and features eight nights of racing from January until this main event, the Dubai World Cup is the final race in the carnival.
