Next Swansea City manager Odds
After Michael Duff was sacked as Swansea City manager on December 4th, 18th placed Swansea City were worried about the teams below them and when Luke Williams took over. Swansea City's form took a tragic turn, losing 5 out of their next 6 games. However, that run did include the top four teams in the division, the 5th defeat came at home to Plymouth Argyle, which was a concern.
Swansea would go onto recover and end up finishing in 14th after picking up six wins in the last 13 games, losing just four of those games.
It's difficult to determine whether or not things have improved for Swansea under WIlliams but their end of season form was promising and has given their new coach the chance for a full season.
A repeat of last season could see Luke Williams sacked
After Russell Martin left Swansea at the end of the 2022/23 campaign, both Michael Duff and Luke Williams have tried to push the club forward.
Duff failed to win any of his first seven games in-charge of the club but followed that up with four wins in a row. Meanwhile, Williams lost five of his first six games before going on the run mentioned above.
Swansea can ill-afford a slow start to the season and considering with new beginnings, the club performed so poorly last season, (they also only won 1 of their first seven in 2022/23), another slow start could see Williams sacked and immediately replaced.
If Williams is sacked as Swansea coach, who replaces him?
If Luke Williams is sacked as Swansea coach, it will be a harsh sacking, given the improvement they saw towards the end of the last campaign. However, if he is sacked, Swansea City's intent is clear, bring in a young coach from lower leagues who plays an attacking brand of football. Duff was criticised for not fitting that style and ultimately, it felt like his undoing.
Out of Swansea's last five managers, only Graham Potter has been over the age of 40 (42) but Potter was regarded as one of the next generation of great coaches, which it could be argued he has gone on to achieve with Brighton and moving to Chelsea.
A name that could possibly be tempted with a move to Swansea and fits the bill of what they are looking for is Portsmouth manager John Mousinho. Who won league one with 'Pompy' in 2023/24, meaning it could be difficult to persuade the Portsmouth manager to leave the club.
The likes of Mat Salder and Mike Williamson would also fit the demographic but come from League Two, Walsall had their best season since being relegated from League One last season under Salder and Williamson took MK Dons from 16th to 4th last season and arguably would have been promoted had Williamson had a full season in charge, their abysmal play-off showing against Crawley would likely put some teams off Williamson in pre-season.
