Plymouth Argyle Betting Odds
Plymouth Argyle are newcomers to the Championship, having first dropped out of England’s second tier in 09/10. Defensively, Plymouth conceded 70 goals in 23/24, a total that will need to improve if the Plymouth Argyle betting odds are to point to anything but relegation. They were especially poor on the road. Last-place Rotherham were the only club to win fewer away games than Plymouth Argyle in the Championship last season.
Seemingly doomed from the outset in the early Plymouth Argyle relegation odds, they did anything but secure their position in the league last season, finishing 21st and, by the grace of a single point, avoiding relegation.
Oddly, they’ve hired Wayne Rooney to do a job that the former Everton striker couldn’t do for Birmingham City.
Rooney, who had decent spells at D.C. United and Derby County, had a managerial Points Per Game stat of 0.67 in 23/24, after shepherding Birmingham to nine losses in 15 games.
The Blues went down instead of Plymouth.
Argyle's striking prowess can keep The Pilgrims in The Championship in 2024/25. With 59 goals scored during the last campaign, 20 of which came from club record signing Morgan Whittaker, only Blackburn and Watford had a better tally outside the top ten.
Luckily, Whittaker is sticking around. The Derby-born forward arrived on loan from Swansea City and was briefly courted by Rangers before being sold for £1m to Plymouth. Even Italian giants Lazio couldn’t tempt Whittaker away from Home Park. On paper, The Pilgrims have one of the weakest squads in the league.
Plymouth Argyle Relegation Odds
The odds on Plymouth Argyle to get relegated were short at the start of last season, so when a Joe Edwards goal secured another year in the league against Hull City back in May, a miracle was claimed on the south coast.
Wayne Rooney is Plymouth’s fourth manager this decade (and third in three seasons), a record that comes straight out of Chelsea’s playbook. While this won’t have done much for squad cohesion, there’s seemingly no point clinging to a manager — Neil Dewsnip — who offered safety only by the smallest of margins.
Plymouth's first signing under Rooney came in late June when 23-year-old Muhamed Tijani agreed to join the Pilgrims from Slavia Prague on a one-year loan.
A centre-forward, Tijani scored just two goals in 25 matches in 23/24 so it's not clear what Rooney expects the Nigerian to do for Plymouth, especially in the shadow of Whittaker and Ryan Hardie. Tijani does have a stronger record in the Europa League (two goals in five) but his discipline on the field is questionable.
Fixture scheduling will impact the Plymouth Argyle relegation odds. Local newspaper Plymouth Live referred to several dates as "shockers", including the eighth consecutive away match on Boxing Day (in distant Coventry) and a Tuesday night in Norwich.
Plymouth will also make a trip to Middlesbrough on Good Friday. Their final game of 24/25 will be against Premier League club-in-exile Leeds United, which may seem like a foregone conclusion in the Plymouth Argyle betting.
It's a difficult thing for fans to accept, but mid-table for Plymouth Argyle may be out of the club's reach, especially with a manager that seems to be getting by on the strength of his name rather than any managerial chops. Derby County finished 21st and 23rd with Rooney at the helm. It's going to be hard for Plymouth to stay up in 23/24.
