Cardiff City Betting Odds
In 2018/19, Cardiff City betting options shifted from the Premier League page to the Championship. Initially, the Welsh club looked set to build a return to the top flight. Finishing fifth and bowing out in the playoffs in 2019/20, it was a fair start for Cardiff, but it’s been downhill from there.
Cardiff City relegation odds became a subject of conversation in 2021/22 and 2022/23, but the team managed to hold on, finishing 18th and 21st, respectively. By the conclusion of last season, Cardiff was 12th in the Championship, but the placing could be seen as a bit misleading.
They finished with the same number of wins as in 2019/20, which was 19, but lost 22 games – more than the relegated Huddersfield Town. Cardiff also conceded 70 goals, which was the fourth-highest count in the league. When Cardiff City odds came up, you’d only look at win or loss as, by the end, they only drew five league games.
Scoring goals was the team’s biggest struggle. After the turn of the year, Cardiff only scored two goals in a game six times in 21 games, never scored more than two in this spell, and were kept off of the score sheet six times. That said, nine wins and one draw was a very good return for the rate of scoring.
It’s not easy to find an out-and-out goalscorer who could solve this issue, especially as the team only put up 10.9 total shots per game, ranking fourth in the Championship. Scoring the fewest goals from open play but the most from set pieces, it’s clear what Cardiff need.
Cardiff City Odds to Get Promoted
Goals and midfield grit are what Cardiff City need. As it stands, they distinctly lack these two facets, which has led to the Cardiff City Championship promotion odds being way out at 14/1. They were caught on the counter early and often last season but finished with the third-best discipline record and the second-fewest fouls per game at 9.5.
You’d think that, once counterattacks were getting underway, you could rely on a player to put in a tactical foul to bring a stop to the danger. Having tougher midfielders with better positioning skill who are willing to get their shin pads dirty isn’t a difficult task – especially when compared to their other primary need. Finding a natural goalscorer who can put away 20 or more goals a season isn’t easy. Last season, Karlan Grant, Perry Ng, and Kion Etete finished as the joint top scorers in all competitions for Cardiff City. Each of them scored six goals and Ng is a defender.
However, if these two needs can be addressed over the summer, we could see the odds on Cardiff City to be relegated shrink and the team become a more menacing threat to the playoff places. For now, though, the Bluebirds look set to be trying to avoid relegation.
Cardiff City Relegation Odds
Set-piece dominance powered Cardiff City to their top-half finish last season. Ng and centre-back Dimitrios Goutas combined for ten goals in all competitions, which offers a solid foundation of scoring for a savvy striker to build on. That said, if these goal contributions wane, the Cardiff City relegation odds will get shorter.
As shown in the Championship title odds, the Bluebirds are more towards the other end of the rankings, sitting at 40/1 and only above Plymouth Argyle and Oxford United. Coming into the campaign, the odds on Cardiff City to be relegated set them among the main candidates to go down.
