Betting on the African Cup of Nations Group Stages

At the African Cup of Nations tournament, teams are split into six groups of four with the top two teams in each group progressing to the knockout rounds. Then a further four out of the six teams that finish fourth progress based on their performance. This means that you tend to find some shock results in the group stages of the competition and that is often represented in AFCON betting tips. Teams go into the group stages expecting to qualify, deliver under-par performances and struggle to recover. Some examples from 2021 saw Ghana and Algeria fail to qualify while the likes of Malawi, Gambia and Comoros all made it to the latter stages of the AFCON competition.

It is rare for teams to win all three games in the group stage, so when backing particular African nations, be prepared for upsets. When backing the outright winners of each groups, the betting odds offer a great indication of who will top each group; however, if you back all the favourites in an accumulator, one is likely to let you down. For example, in the 2021 competition Tunisia were widely expected to win group F comfortably but scrapped through after losing to Mali and Gambia.

However, if you're looking to place an accumulator bet on the group stages, we recommend checking out the BetUK Acca club which can provide you with profit boosts.

Betting on the African Cup of Nations Knockout Rounds

Once the four third placed teams in the African Cup of Nations is confirmed, they will face the teams who won groups A-D. With the second placed teams being joined by the winners of groups E & F. However, the first knockout round can provide some of the biggest games in the competition and that is when we begin to see competitive African Cup of Nations odds. The fixtures in the first knockout round in 2021 were:

  • Burkina Faso Vs Gabon
  • Nigeria Vs Tunisia
  • Senegal Vs Cape Verde
  • Mali Vs Equatorial Guinea
  • Guinea Vs Gambia
  • Cameroon Vs Comoros
  • Ivory Coast Vs Egypt
  • Morocco Vs Malawi

Take out Morocco Vs Malawi and Cameroon Vs Comoros and the other games were very competitive on paper, with Ivory Coast Vs Egypt many people's picks for the final but with Egypt losing to Nigeria in their opening game, Egypt had finished second in their group and we saw the match early. This is something that the AFCON offers that you won't see in many leagues such as the Premier League, betting lines often have a clear favourite but when the knockouts come for AFCON, the competition is incredibly competitive.

2023 African Cup of Nations Betting

When looking at the betting odds for the 2023 African Cup of Nations, you'll find excellent odds for some top teams. For example, AFCON's most successful team Egypt are below the likes of Mali and Tunisia in the odds. However, the favourites are hosts Cameroon and reigning champions Senegal who beat Egypt in a penalty shootout to win in 2021. It's unlikely that Egypt will add their tally and build on being the most successful team in AFCON history. However, it is more likely that they'll be knocked out early in the knockout stage.

AFCON bets

The Africa Cup of Nations betting markets reflect the same options bettors get when wagering on the European Championships and Copa America. The main focus is, of course, around who will win the next AFCON. However, over the years BetUK has provided more and more great AFCON bets and now there are literally hundreds to choose from across each tournament.

The next Africa Cup of Nations to bet on takes place between January and February 2024. Officially it is known as the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations because it was originally scheduled for the summer. However, weather conditions in Ivory Coast during the summer of 2022 convinced organisers to move the tournament to the more temperate winter months.

Betting on AFCON 2023 is therefore underway and BetUK is here to offer players a wide range of bet choices. These include futures markets like:

  • AFCON outright odds
  • Group winners
  • Stage of elimination

Plus the usual football betting match markets like:

  • Match winner
  • Correct score
  • Over/unders
  • Both Teams To Score
  • Handicaps
  • First player to score
  • Player cards
  • Card totals
  • Corners
  • HT/FT

2023 AFCON bet tips

We’re heading towards the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations betting peak, where bettors begin placing their wagers ahead of the tournament. It all kicks off on 13 January when hosts Ivory Coast take on Guinea-Bissau in Abidjan.

The 2023 AFCON final takes place on 11 February and the odds suggest the usual big names will be targeting that match in Abidjan. As hosts, Ivory Coast will be desperate to get there and win their second AFCON within a decade.

But before then there are plenty of football bet options available to punters. With that in mind, here are some Africa Cup of Nations betting tips worth considering ahead of the tournament:

Betting on hosts in African Cup of Nations

No host nation has successfully reached the AFCON final since Egypt in 2006. Before that, host nations had a 54% chance of making it to their home AFCON final. The reason for the change is the improvement in facilities for visiting countries and less localised bias that favour host nations. Ivory Coast, as hosts here, may well not reach the final.

Betting on Goals in the African Cup of Nations

The average number of goals scored in the last nine AFCON finals is 0.7. In fact, Cameroon's 2-1 win over Egypt in 2017 was the only final since 2006 where both teams have scored. So, expect another low-scoring final in Abidjan and, potentially, a seventh penalty shootout this century.

African Cup of Nations Golden boot betting

The Africa Cup of Nations doesn't usually deliver high-scoring individuals in the Golden Boot race. Vincent Aboubakar scored eight in 2021 to be the first player to surpass seven goals at the tournament since Hossam Hassan and Benni McCarthy in 1998. So check out the outsiders for the Golden Boot as they have just as much chance of top scoring that the big boys.

Keep an eye on third place

There are six groups in the Africa Cup of Nations, with the top two automatically progressing to the last-16. Four of the six third-placed teams will also progress, so be aware that there are no dead-rubbers here. Every game counts so don't expect bore draws or easily one-sided games in the group stage.

Betting live on the African Cup of Nations

Use BetUK’s live AFCON betting odds to get closer to the action with live betting. Our sportsbook offers extensive live markets on every match of the tournament. It means that with a little bit of research you can bet live on Africa Cup of Nations matches with more confidence, and make smarter choices.

African Cup of Nations Winners

If you're betting on who will win the Africa Cup of Nations then it's worth looking at the past winners to get a sense of where the 2023 trophy will end up. No team since Egypt in the mid-2000s has won back-to-back AFCONs. A win for Senegal, then, would be a shock for the statisticians among us.

Egypt, Senegal and Ivory Coast have each twice reached the final since 2010, while Ghana have lost three of their four AFCON semi-final appearances in that period.

Here is a list of the most recent Africa Cup of Nations champions and the scores in each final. As you can see, penalty shootouts are not uncommon in African football's showdown event. Use the list when considering the latest AFCON winner odds.
